AOL in Spotlight with Success in Attracting Site Traffic

by Timothy Johnson

The Internet Pioneer credits transformation for steady growth in visitors and page views!

Nearly a year after beginning an overhaul, AOL is reporting its Web content sites saw record traffic in March, capping off six solid months of consecutive growth -- and fueling renewed claims that the company is back!

Citing data from online metrics firm comScore that showed a 28 percent monthly increase in page views for its content sites, AOL proudly proclaimed that its strategy to transform itself into an ad-supported content network is working.

"Our strong growth is a direct result of rebuilding each and every one of our vertical Web sites over the past 12 months," Bill Wilson, AOL's executive vice president of vertical programming, said in a statement.

Last year, many industry insiders were ready to declare AOL dead in the water. The giant had outlived its usefulness as an Internet Service Provider and turned to providing free email services attached to its status as a portal.

This year over last, March page views across AOL's "Web programming" properties -- its content sites -- rose 35 percent, with unique visitors up 11 percent to 56.5 million. The traffic count excludes visitors to AOL's e-commerce sites, its e-mail and instant messaging services and traffic to the AOL.com site itself.

This news comes as gibLinkers hear that web advertising is expected to grow in the next several years. eMarketer.com estimates that U.S. onlikne advertising dollars will rise in the next several years from $21 billion this year to $42 billion by 2011.

And why not? The latest television ratings show that American television viewers are simply not returning to network television now that the writers’ guild strike is over and new episodes of former favorites are showing up. The viewers “sampled” elsewhere and now, the networks will have to pay for their slip: allowing the viewers to get siphoned away by other visuals.

Advertising is the same. What had been traditionally the game of print and broadcast media is now headed for the net. The game has changed and with it, the outlook for companies like AOL, Google, and Yahoo.

In fact, AOL recently went on an acquisition spree, snapping up online ad companies such as Tacoda, Quigo Third Screen Media.

  Thought of the Week

Cooperation

We gain what we want through the help and support of others.
To be agreeable, to be liked, to cooperate-this contributes immeasurably to our success. When we coordinate our efforts with the efforts of others, we speed the way to our goals. Cooperation builds success.

Change is Good!

Change is sometimes threatening to us. It takes away the "known". We may be the type of person who likes routine, it is our security, and "change" may upset our routine, our security.

The saddest thing is watching those who don't want to change, they resist the change, they put up barriers to try and stop change.

Our world is constantly changing, has been for years and will continue in the years to come. Heraclitus was a Greek Philosopher and lived during 500 B.C.. He is quoted as saying, "There is nothing permanent except change." That was written many years ago and now here we are entering the millennium and change seems to be much faster today.

Technology is changing our lives in many different ways! Everything from faster more efficient ways of doing business to lowering the cost of goods by eliminating the middle man. It is eliminating some jobs, however, creating new opportunities.

Resisting change in your life wastes valuable energy. When people focus on stopping the change rather than being open and trying to understand the change they are missing opportunities.

In every change there is a positive effect. At the time when the change occurs we sometimes cannot see the positive, but if we focus and really look for it is there.

Just imagine what our world would be like if change did not occur and we think you’ll agree: change is good.
