MORE  PONZI   AFTERMATH   INFORMATION 

This one a shocker to me

Previous posts have discussed “claw-back” lawsuits, by trustees going after Ponzi early-in “winners” for recoupment of ill gotten gains. Information about the latest one was published in the Sarasota Herald Tribune, Page 3 of the Business Section, on 2/24/2011. I repeat it verbatim, without further comment: SEC lawyer named in Madoff suit. The top lawyer at the Securities and Exchange Commission had been named as a defendant in a lawsuit by the trustee who’s trying to recover money for victims of Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme. The lawsuit was filed by Irving Picard against David Becker, and claims Becker’s family earned more than $1.5 million in phony profits from Madoff’s investments.

 

IT COST ME 60 EURO'S TO NOT BUY A RING - SEE WHY

I bought a ring in Athens, Greece a few years ago. I paid 1,000 Euro’s with a VISA Card. Two hours later, when I went back to pick it up, after sizing, the stone had shattered during the process. The Jeweler immediately processed a VISA reversal for 1,000 Euro’s. When I got home, my VISA bill showed a 1,000 Euro charge, with a 3% foreign transaction fee, followed immediately by a 1,000 Euro reversal and another 3% foreign transaction fee. No recourse. I cancelled the card and my relationship with the issuing bank.

 

Most, but not all, USA banks offering VISA and MasterCard accounts charge a 3% fee when you use the card in a currency other than US Dollars. I now carry a Capital One VISA with no foreign transaction fee. If you go shopping for a VISA or MasterCard without a foreign transaction fee, and if you stop by Capital One, my specific card type is – Capital One – No Hassle Rewards – VISA Signature. Don’t leave the USA without a “no foreign transaction fee” credit card.

There may be alternatives

Of the hundreds of new direct selling companies launched every year, most go out of business within the first few years. A very small percentage of these start-ups make it to the top of the mountain and reach the highest levels of success. In the middle are a certain percentage of companies that do alright; the bills get paid, for the most part the distributor base and ownership make enough money to be content but for unknown reasons they just can’t seem to take the company to the next level.

For such companies, continuing to struggle and closing the doors are not the only options. I have become aware that a very knowledgeable and long term consultant to the industry, whom I know personally and hold in the highest regard, has added mergers and acquisitions to his consultancy practice. I also have become aware of two direct selling companies that actively want to explore merger type relationships and have contacted me seeking referrals. MERCHANT ACCOUNTS

 

The business interruption and business destruction potential of a merchant account freeze or hold or shutdown, is real – and it is catastrophic. Have more than one account, and have them with banks that have a familiarity and understanding of direct selling.
